Vermeij et al. published "The temperate marine Peruvian Province: How history accounts for its unusual biota." This study focuses on the Peruvian Province, which extends from northern Peru to southern Chile. The researchers employed historical and fossil data to analyze how past events have shaped the region's current species composition and ecological interactions. They examined benthic and benthically feeding species, especially those with fossil records, from the Miocene and Pliocene epochs to the present. The study identified twelve unusual attributes of the Peruvian province biota, many resulting from repeated extinctions.
