Network framework merges food web and economic dynamics for a more comprehensive fishery management

Appilineni Kushal, Michael R. Springborn, and Fernanda S. Valdovinos published the article "Assessing impacts of bycatch policies and fishers' heterogeneous information on food webs and fishery sustainability" in the theme issue 'Connected interactions: enriching food web research by spatial and social interactions.'



The authors developed a network framework that integrates ecological networks and bioeconomic elements to facilitate the assessment of fishery management policies. Few theoretical studies successfully incorporate the complex and dynamic interaction of all the species within a marine food web, including humans, when producing policy. The novel framework developed by the authors aims to bridge that gap to further effective ecosystem-based fishery management.
